Meet Billy
Billy Flamingo is the guy who rides up behind you when you’re slacking; when you’re tired, and slogging along an exhausting trail, and you’ve given in to fatigue. He’ll show up whenever things get tough, always just out of sight. Light and cheery, he nevertheless demands your best effort. “Come on, Bro! Is that really all you’ve got?”
His expectations seem impossible, but he’s persuasive enough to make you believe they are not. He is intolerant of “pretty good” and disdainful of “good enough.” Only your full measure will suffice, only the best will do.
Maybe you’ll meet Billy someday. I hope you do. If you let him, he’ll track you down. Just pick a towering goal and commit. When things go sideways, when everything is an uphill grind into a headwind, and you think you can’t, he’ll cheerfully roll up and demand that you do. Maybe his name is not Billy, maybe it’s something else. But you’ll recognize the voice, and it’ll be strangely familiar to you.
